We’re big fans of twisty-turny soap storylines, full of surprises and intrigue. Sharon’s baby drama in EastEnders. Michelle and Robert in Coronation Street, and Walford’s Ben giving up his life of crime for Callum are just some of our recent faves. Soaps are so good at keeping us on our toes, never knowing what’s going to happen next.

But lately, we’ve noticed a bit of trend for stories being over-complicated. Plots that would be more than enough for viewers, being twisted with drama piled upon drama. And we’re beginning to find it a bit exhausting.

Here’s our round-up of which stories we think have been too complicated:

Moira, Cain and Nate in Emmerdale

First Nate made trouble for Rhona when they snogged in a club in the Big Night Out episodes. Then he showed up in the village, took a job working for Moira and soon he was seducing his boss. When Cain found out, there was another surprise in store – it turned out Nate was Cain’s long-lost son from a relationship he’d never mentioned. So Debbie gained yet another brother (is that five now?) and we all got a headache from trying to keep up.

Martin and Stacey in EastEnders

We get that Lacey Turner had to go on maternity leave but couldn’t Stacey just have really gone to look after Sean? This whole being on the run for something Phil doesn’t seem remotely bothered about, is stretching our imaginations. Martin becoming Ben’s sidekick is odd, while lying about sleeping with Sonia and then actually sleeping with Ruby is downright wrong. Not to mention Stacey having had time to meet a new bloke. We have a lot of questions…

Victoria’s rape in Emmerdale

Victoria Sugden’s rape was a shocking and brilliant bit of telly. It was so believable and raw. We loved it. Her pregnancy was an extra complication that we could just about live with given her backstory of wanting a baby so much. But then Robert beat up Lee, and Lee died. And Robert went to prison for a loooong time and the whole thing became about Robron instead (AND it totally short-changed us where Robron is concerned. That was NOT the ending they deserved).

Then Vic met new love interest Luke who turned out to be Lee’s brother. And now Wendy – Lee and Luke’s mum – has moved to the village. And somewhere along the line the brilliance of the rape storyline has been forgotten in all the unnecessary extra bits.

Sinead’s death in Coronation Street

Sinead dies Coronation Street

What an amazing rollercoaster Sinead’s cancer battle was. Her final days were so sensitively written and acted beautifully by Katie McGlynn. And Daniel’s grief was heartbreaking to watch. A sweet, funny, young mother dying of cancer should have been more than enough to keep the viewers gripped. And it really was. So why, WHY, did we have the additional complication of Daniel kissing Bethany? All the grief with Sinead’s family and Beth hating on Daniel, and the arguing and the insults just distracted us from the real drama of Sinead’s final messages for her baby boy.

Sinead’s funeral in Coronation Street

It would have been enough to see the Street say farewell to Sinead. Daniel deciding to speak about his wife at the funeral despite not believing in God, was such a heart-wrenching watch. But while we wanted to be at the funeral with Sinead’s friends and family, our attention was divided between the sad goodbye and the horrible burglary at Daniel’s flat as Kel – we later found out – trashed the place and nicked Sinead’s precious laptop with all her videos for Bertie on it. It all seemed a bit too much when our emotions were running high anyway.

Do you think some soap storylines are a bit too complicated or are you enjoying things being so dramatic? Let us know.
