Jai and Laurel are locking lips in Emmerdale, and though we’d never seen them as a potential couple before, we’re loving their sweet romance. Somehow, it just works.
Soaps are brilliant at throwing unlikely pairings together and often a couple will come out of the blue and become part of the show’s history. So we thought we’d have a look at our fave unlikely soap romances.
Sheanu
When a couple gets given a name by fans, then you know they’ve become soap icon. When Sharon and Keanu started flirting, we weren’t convinced, but soon their hot and steamy romance won us over.

And it seemed the pair were really falling for each other. But add obstacles like Phil Mitchell, love-struck Louise and a couple of unplanned pregnancies, and it’s clear the path of true love is not going to run smooth this time.
Vanity
Charity and Vanessa hadn’t had much to do with each other before a drunken night led to them becoming the fans’ favourite feisty female duo. They’ve seen each other through hard times and good times, one hilarious wedding proposal and all manner of family dramas. We’re counting down the days until they mkae it official because the hen night is going to be epic!
Kat Slater and Kush Kazemi
Love them. Love. Them. Finally Kat’s got something to do that isn’t Alfie-related and EastEnders is much stronger for it. And after all those years of Alfie and his horrible shirts, we reckon poor Kat deserves a bit of Kush’s buff bod. With things kicking off between Kush and Stacey as he fights to make his access to little Arthur official, it’s looking bleak for KK, but we’re hoping they’re strong enough to weather the storm.
Kana
Not quite as unexpected, perhaps, what with the simmering sexual chemistry they had for months before they finally got together. But given that Rana was married to Zeedan, it wasn’t going to be easy for Kate and Rana to make a go of it. When they finally got it on, we all celebrated, until Rana became the tragic victim of the factory roof collapse and Kana was no more.
Cindy Cunningham and Dirk Savage
We were all surprised when, fresh from the drama with Dr Browning, Cindy fell for unlikely sweetheart Dirk Savage. Good-hearted, family man, Dirk wasn’t gold-digger Cindy’s usual type but they rode out the bad times and seemed set for a happy ending with Cindy even choosing her fella over daughter Holly – much to Holly’s fury and despite evil Milo’s scheming. But Milo took tragic revenge when he electrocuted Dirk on Holly’s wedding day, leaving poor Cindy devastated.
